Cell phones have made several changes in the last ten years. Ten years ago cell phones were just starting to be popular. Most cell phones did not even have unlimited minutes ten years ago. Some cellphone plans had several thousand night and weekend minutes, but those plans were almost a 100 a month. The cell phones ten years ago did not have color screens. The phones had a blue light background. Ten years ago flip phones with a blue light background were popular. These phones had basic internet.

Over the years cell phones began to change. Cell phones started to have color screens. Most people were fascinated to have a cell phone with a color screen. Slide cellphones with slid out keyboards were the next big thing after color screens. Cellphones that slid open are much easier to text on than flip phones. Within recent years Smartphones were introduced to the cellphone family. People were happy to have handheld computers that they could surf the internet on. Smartphones are continually changing. Smartphones now come with GPS technology, video camera, fast 3G and 4G internet, and several other features. It remains to be seen how cellphones will change in the next ten years.

As the saying goes, ‘Need is the mother of invention’. Well, these days innovation in technology seems to be driving need as certain newly developed products become so mainstream that being without them can really single you out as being behind the times. With the rate at which technology advances increasing every year, it’s becoming harder and harder to stay on the pulse of cutting edge technology.

Even Moore’s Law for processor speed doubling every 18 months only held true up to about 4 years ago when the introduction of multiple core processors signaled the shift from simply finding the fastest processor speed to finding the one most able to handle today’s multi tasking PC environments.Never heard of this before? Get up to speed here. Todays most powerful computer has up to 12 cores and an incredible 32 gigabytes of memory.

Similarly, the explosion in popularity of tablet PCs and e-readers has succeeded where a generation of ‘mini’ laptops were short lived, users preferring to have a less powerful but more user friendly and portable device instead.

Key developments that will continue to see technology advance are memory, both size and capacity, battery life and integration with wireless communication. No doubt other technology shifts will occur and surprise us even further in the future.

Our electronic media gadgets are not only getting smaller, they are becoming more powerful (in terms of computing power), faster (4 Gigabytes is standard now), and have greater connectivity and application processes. In the past, we had multiple gadgets, from cell phones to MP3 players, personal computers, video players, cameras, eBook readers, and so on. Today, most, if not all, of those functions have been embedded in just a few gadgets. In fact, many current gadgets will soon be obsolete. Look at how many functions the smart phone performs; camera, video player, text, phone calls, audio files, and now full Internet access.

It has been said that soon all we will need are our smartphones and perhaps a tablet. QWERTY keyboards as hardware will disappear, replaced by virtual keyboards and touch screens. No more MP3 players required, and eBooks replaced by the electronic readers. There is even an electronic wallet for our cell phones to act as debit cards. Just place your enabled cell phone near the active product or service retail device, and the cost is electronically debited to your account. The latest innovation is augmented reality, which is a virtual reality overlay on the real world. We are living in a science fiction movie!

What’s 1 more click? Your boss isn’t watching… The Old Cell Phone/Cancer Debate
